iOS 27.2 draws closer, the OLED iPad mini and Apple’s own home camera get more detail, and Apple responds to complaints of skin irritation from the new watches.
iOS 27.2 is expected in the week of 26 October, with Siri AI in more languages
High Software iPhone
The update has been in beta for weeks and arrives early because iOS 27.1 is meant only for the iPhone Duo, which launches on 23 October; other iPhones are expected to skip 27.1. New are Siri AI in French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish, profiles in the Apple TV app, Dual Capture on group FaceTime and a new Up Next in Podcasts. This is an expectation based on the beta track; Apple gives no date.
OLED iPad mini 8: expected A20 Pro, 12GB RAM, Wi-Fi 7 and first water resistance
High iPad Events
Based on code and official product images found earlier, the new iPad mini is expected to get the A20 Pro (2nm) with 12GB of memory instead of 8GB, an OLED screen with thinner bezels and a camera on the landscape edge. The leaks also cite Apple’s N1 chip for Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, a C1X or C2 modem, a speaker system without holes and, for the first time, an IP water-resistance rating. The current model costs $599 and the OLED screen will likely push that up.
Apple’s own home camera still due next year, separate from the LG products
High Home
In a follow-up post Gurman clarifies that the cameras LG is co-developing with Apple are “completely separate” from Apple’s own security device. That device is said not to record video but to use AI to work out which room a person is in, and is expected next year. The LG line of doorbell, lock, thermostat and cameras is still a few months away.
Users report skin irritation from Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4; Apple responds
Medium Watch
On forums and social media, owners report burning and redness under the sensor of the new watches; some suspect a link to heart-rate sensing, which now happens every five seconds. Apple points to a band that is too tight or too loose and to sweat or soap trapped under the watch, says the nickel content is below the EU limit and advises keeping watch and skin clean and dry. For complaints Apple advises consulting a physician; there is no evidence that the new sensors are the cause.
Rumour: Apple waits on Samsung for a bezel-free iPhone display
Low iPhone
A Chinese leaker says Apple is waiting for a Samsung OLED panel that folds down almost 90 degrees on all four sides, so the screen replaces the frame and the iPhone looks nearly bezel-free from the front. Open problems include colour shifts and distortion at the corners, sealing through such bends and antenna placement. Neither Apple nor Samsung has confirmed anything.
Apple launches the Creative Labs programme with The King’s Trust for young people in the UK
Certain Other
Apple and the UK charity The King’s Trust are launching the Creative Labs programme, meant to introduce people aged 18 to 30 to careers in the creative industries. A first cohort of up to 20 takes workshops with Apple experts, with sessions timed around the opening of Apple Music Hall in London. More cohorts are planned over the next year.
Apple drops Intel Macs from the Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad compatibility lists
Certain Mac
Around 25 August all Intel-based Macs disappeared from the compatibility lists on the Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad product pages, and this week the related support pages were updated too. The accessories still work with Intel Macs, so the reason is unclear. Some think it matches the latest macOS, which no longer supports Intel; Apple did not respond to questions.
Next up: 13 October: expected home products (Gurman); 23 October: iPhone Duo on sale; week of 26 October: expected iOS 27.2
