Apple says the iPhone Duo’s inner display has a replaceable top layer, while rumours about the smart home hub and a MacBook Pro with an OLED touchscreen firm up.

Apple says the iPhone Duo has a replaceable top layer on the folding screen

Certain iPhone

Apple vice president Kate Bergeron said in a video interview that the protective layer above the inner display can be removed and replaced. The matte surface is meant to make the crease less visible, and Apple says it did a lot of engineering work to make the layer wear in as gradually as possible. Apple’s list of estimated AppleCare service costs also includes the layer; a replacement would cost $19 with AppleCare.

Gurman: MacBook Pro with OLED touchscreen may come as early as October, slipping to November possible

High Mac Events

In the first episode of his new podcast, Gurman said Apple will likely release 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros with an OLED touchscreen this fall, possibly “as early as October”. According to him Apple is testing the laptops internally with a beta of macOS 27.2. Whether the models keep the MacBook Pro name or become, say, MacBook Ultra is still unclear.

Apple stores received boxes marked “Do Not Open Until October 8”

Medium Home Events

A tipster reported that stores received sealed boxes marked “Do Not Open Until October 8” earlier that week; the editors say they verified this themselves. The contents are probably display material for the stores. It most likely belongs to the home hub, the new Apple TV 4K and the HomePod mini that Gurman says will be unveiled on 13 October.

Smart home hub may come in four colours: silver, space gray, starlight and rose pink

Medium Home

A leaker (pdfu) reports four finishes for the expected home hub; the same colours are said to have appeared earlier in macOS code. Gurman only mentioned the usual grey aluminium finish, so it is uncertain whether all colours will appear. You would also be able to set up a “Photo Face”, and according to Gurman the device gets a square display of about 6 inches.

iPhone 18 Pro sells well in China: Apple number 1 in week 38 with 33 percent share

High iPhone

Market researcher Counterpoint reports that the iPhone 18 Pro series grew 12 percent year over year in its first three days of sales, while the Chinese smartphone market has shrunk 17 percent since July. Apple became number one in week 38 with a 33 percent market share. Counterpoint cites the later arrival of the standard iPhone 18, buyers’ willingness to pay higher prices and strong channel support.

Next up: 13 October: expected home products (Gurman); 23 October: iPhone Duo on sale; October or November: expected OLED MacBook Pro
